Opera Mini is more speedy now

May 14th, 2008 by hn

There is a great news for people who like to use internet over their cellphones. Opera has announced version 4.1 of the Opera Mini mobile web browser. Yes folks, Opera Mini is still alive and I assume more mobile phone users will be using it as it’s a simple, hassle-free, no-strings-attached mobile web browser that works with a wide variety of phones. I’m still using Opera Mini with my trusty old Sony Ericsson P990i, so I’m definitely excited about the update to version 4.1.

So, what’s in store for all of us with this latest version, Opera says - faster features. Opera Mini 4.1 receives request for web pages 50% faster than the old version, faster searching within a web page, faster web site upload and faster file uploading and downloading. In addition, when typing web addresses, Opera Mini 4.1 now suggests completions based on bookmarked sites and browsing history.

Opera Mini 4.1 also received special features for phones with JSR-75. We can now upload and download files using the browser without getting re-routed to the phone’s native browser, upload blogs even while on the go, upload photos, add attachments to web-based email and download other non media-rich content to our mobile phones. In addition, we can also save pages for viewing offline.

Paper-thin display cells become possible

May 12th, 2008 by hn

GM informs – E Ink has now announced availability of its next generation segmented display cells (SDC). The new SDCs are 40% thinner with a wider operational temperature range and increased flexibility for repetitive 3-D bends or 2-D conformable solutions.

The SDC products are simple digit, icon and alpha-numeric displays, offering excellent readability in a paper-thin form factor that uses minimal battery power. The latest generation of E Ink SDCs offer three height levels, depending on backplane configuration: thin PET 330 microns, PET 380 microns, or PI 375 microns. PET options provide 200 micron design rules for the art work or space and trace of 8 mils by 8 mils. The finer pitch PI option uses 100 micron design rules for 4 mils by 4 mils. Increased temperature ranges with operations from -10°C to 60°C, and storage from –25°C to 75°C. Odd shapes are now also possible, meaning non-rectangular unique shapes including holes, curves, and other non-standard designs. Additionally, E Ink’s SDC platform provides viewable angle of nearly 180° and can be viewed under a variety of lighting conditions from direct sun to low-level ambient light. E Ink’s Vizplex based electronic paper solutions are bistable, reflective displays which enable the image to remain for over a year with zero power.

Applications for this next-gen technology include consumer electronics, PC-accessory, display smartcards, capacity indicators, electronic shelf labels, signage and communications applications. The SDC displays use the same E Ink Vizplex technology that is in popular electronic book devices such as the Amazon Kindle, SONY Reader and iRex iLiad. Watches are also able to utilize this technology - in December last year Art Technology launched its Phosphor branded luxury watches utilizing E Ink’s electronic paper for the displays. HTC Touch gets 3D interface

May 7th, 2008 by hn

After a long journey of rumors, now we can experience new invention of HTC who announces today all came down to one single device - the HTC Touch Diamond. The device features the latest HTC Touch 3D interface (codenamed HTC Manila), which was also showcased officially for the first time today. The HTC Diamond is extremely touch-optimized - a route Windows Mobile should have taken a long time ago.

We’ve already told you about the tons of HTC devices that were expected today. Only the HTC Touch Diamond was announced at the HTC event in London which is a bit of disappointment. The device itself is nothing near a disappointment however.

Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, the HTC Touch Diamond packs a 2.8-inch VGA display and is extremely thin at 11.5mm. It has a built-in accelerometer which allows screen auto rotation - another feature that should have been on-board a long time ago. A GPS receiver, Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera add to the lengthy specs sheet.

The HTC Touch Diamond will run on a Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor and will have 192MB DDR SDRAM. Additionally, it would have the sweet 4GB of storage memory (no memory card slot though). FM radio with RDS and a proprietary HTC mini-USB port are also on board along with Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR.

The highlight of the new HTC Touch 3D user interface will be the web capabilities - smart desktop-like rendering and superb touch navigation through web pages and hyperlinks. Besides Wi-Fi the HTC Touch Diamond will also make use of dual-band UMTS support plus HSDPA 7.2 Mbps. Lets wish to touch new HTC Touch Diamond in near future.

New BlackBerry without 3G Capability

May 7th, 2008 by hn

PDAS NEWS informs – BlackBerry 9000 is hardly 8 hours old, and the BG is already continuing from last week on his BlackBerry news-breaking streak - if loose lips sink ships then you gotta think somebody at RIM must be starting to get worried. Is a BlackBerry 9000 on its way that doesn’t have 3G?! Apparently that could be the case! In CrackBerry.com Podcast Episode 008, Craig and I spend a few minutes talking about the potential coming of a 3G-less 9000, though from the info we had to work with we were thinking it was maybe codenamed "Javelin" (which now that it seems were wrong I can’t help but wonder what the heck Javelin may be?!). Why release a 3G-less 9000? Most likely to bring down the cost of the device (cheaper chipset) with this model  squarely aimed at being the direct replacement for the current 8800 series. Hope more details will be available pretty soon.

Ireland selles Xbox 360 HD DVD or €9.99 only

May 6th, 2008 by hn

Rumor has it that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, which has been seen as slightly less valuable since Toshiba pulled the plug on the once mighty red format, has stooped to €9.99 across the pond. For those not savvy on the absurd devaluation of the US dollar, we’re talking $15.47 — and that’s with a Media Center remote bundled in, too. We’re totally straight-faced when we say that’s actually not a half bad deal if you’re a fan of the media already out there, but the parsimonious among us are definitely waiting for these to come bundled with our favorite cereals before pulling the trigger.
